Welcome to Refine Dermatology, a family owned and operated dermatology practice that is focused on improving the health of its patients while using a hospitable approach.
At the head of our team is Dr. Jill Salyards, a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in general, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology. After working for larger, corporate owned practices for a few years, she realized her desire to have her own practice that makes the care and experience of the patient the priority, not the profit margin.
Her husband, Andy Salyards, has spent the last decade starting and operating restaurants and has constantly wondered why doctors offices aren’t more hospitable and focused on the patients' experience.
They decided to take the leap and open Refine Dermatology to allow people a local option for their dermatology care where patients are confident that they will see a doctor at their visit and will be treated with kindness and respect; nothing less.
Dr. Jill Salyards is a board-certified dermatologist with clinical training in general, cosmetic and surgical dermatology in adults and children of all ages. Originally from California, she attended medical school at Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine where she graduated as valedictorian of her class. Dr. Salyards went on to complete her internship and dermatology residency at Largo Medical Center in Largo, Florida.
Dr. Salyards is an active member of many national and state dermatology organizations and attends many national conferences to stay up to date on the most recent advances in dermatology. She has a wide range of clinical expertise and enjoys treating complex dermatologic conditions including acne, psoriasis, eczema and skin cancer. Dr. Salyards is also an expert in cosmetic and laser procedures including neurotoxins, fillers and laser technology and is passionate about helping patients look their best at any age.
She currently resides in Knoxville with her husband and their 4 children. In her free time, she enjoys baking, playing guitar and piano, crocheting, and exploring the outdoors with her family.
From being a merchant marine to a serial entrepreneur in the hospitality industry, Andy has collected an array of experiences that he applies to Refine Dermatology. His focus is on the patients’ experience and improving the processes of the practice.
His goal is to help Refine Dermatology represent what a hospitable medical practice looks like.
Along with Dr. Jill, Andy has been blessed to be the father of four boys that allow him to keep playing with toys well into his adulthood. He loves smoking and curing meat and is known for giving away homemade bacon!

Makayla Hilsinger is a Certified Clinical Medical assistant that has a passion to be the light in patients’ dark times. Her healthcare journey started when she was in high school, where she volunteered for four years at a local hospital in a variety of departments. Makayla then went on to be a medical insurance patient advocate, cancer center department administrator, and eventually a CCMA in dermatology.
Other than being dedicated to quality patient care, Makayla’s particular medical interests are hair loss and cancer screening, monitoring, and treatment. Having alopecia herself, she finds that this connects her to patients on a deeper level and enjoys being a safe space to all.
When not at the office, you can find Makayla with her two daughters- Ophelia and Opal. Spending time outside at any body of water, dancing to music, and sight-seeing animals are a few of their favorite activities to do together.
