Microneedling is a versatile treatment with little downtime that can be used to treat several different types of skin conditions. This treatment uses the body’s own wound healing processes to improve the overall appearance of your skin. Conditions that can be improved with microneedling include:

  • Acne or surgical scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Large pores
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Stretchmarks
  • Uneven skin texture

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a medical procedure that involves creating micro-injuries in the skin using sterilized needles. These small wounds initiate a healing process whereby collagen and elastic production is stimulated. SkinPen® is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device and sets the industry standard for safety and is the device we use at Refine Dermatology.

What is PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma and is a procedure in which blood is drawn from the patient, centrifuged and the platelets are separated out. These platelets contain growth factors which can be used to enhance collagen and elastic production and speed up the rejuvenation process when combined with microneedling. This treatment also coined the "Vampire Facial" has become popular due to it's impressive results, minimal downtime and affordability.

What to expect at my microneedling visit?

Microneedling is typically very well-tolerated and almost painless when performed with a topical numbing agent. When you come to the office, we will apply a topical anesthetic prior to the procedure. If you are having PRP performed, your blood will be drawn while you wait for your topical anesthetic to start working. Once you are numb, we will clean your face, apply the PRP and start the procedure. The microneedling procedure takes about 30 minutes, so plan to be with us for about an hour.

How many microneedling treatments do I need?

Depending on the skin condition being treated and desired outcomes, the number of treatments needed can vary. Best results are typically seen when 3-6 treatments are performed in a series 1 month apart.

What can I expect after my treatment?

There is very little downtime associated with microneedling. The treated area may be pink and mildly inflamed, similar to a sunburn, for 24-48 hours following your SkinPen procedure. Immediately after your treatment, you will be given a kit of topicals to use for the 72 hours following your treatment. You will need to avoid sun exposure for 24 hours following your treatment. We also advise that you keep your skin clean of any cosmetics or sunscreen for 24 hours following the procedure. Avoid strenuous exercise or excessive perspiration for 72 hours after treatment. The benefits of microneedling will begin almost immediately, however visible changes will continue to improve for up to 6 months after treatment.
