What is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs micrographic surgery is a highly specialized, precise technique used to treat certain types of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and some melanomas. It is considered the gold standard for skin cancer removal, particularly in areas where preserving healthy tissue is critical, such as the face, ears, hands, and feet.

How Mohs Surgery Works:

  1. Step 1: Removal of Cancerous Tissue
The surgeon removes the visible portion of the skin cancer along with a thin layer of surrounding tissue.
  2. Step 2: Lab Analysis in Real Time
The removed tissue is carefully mapped, processed, and examined under a microscope to identify and precisely locate any remaining cancer cells.
  3. Step 3: Additional Tissue Removal if Needed

If cancer cells are found at the edges of the sample, the surgeon removes additional tissue only from the affected area.

This process is repeated until no cancer cells remain, ensuring maximum cancer removal while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.

Why Choose Mohs Surgery?

  • High Cure Rates: Mohs surgery offers up to a 99% cure rate for primary skin cancers and 94% for recurrent cases.
  • Minimal Scarring: The procedure minimizes tissue removal, leading to smaller scars and better cosmetic outcomes.
  • In-Office Procedure: Mohs surgery is performed in a dermatology office under local anesthesia, allowing for a comfortable and convenient experience.

Your dermatologist or Mohs surgeon will guide you through the process and discuss whether this treatment is the right choice for your skin cancer care.
