What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable substances used to temporarily add or restore volume for aesthetic purposes without surgery. As we age, we begin to lose fat and bone in the face. There is also loss of collagen and hyaluronic acid which causes the skin to begin to wrinkle and sag. Dermal fillers are used to help recreate a more youthful appearance by addressing naturally occurring volume loss. Fillers can also be used to enhance the lips, to improve aging of the hands, and to decrease under eye shadows.

At Refine Dermatology, we offer naturally derived hyaluronic acid based fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that is found in the body, so it does not require any allergy testing prior to injection. It is also reversible if there are any complications or unwanted results using hyaluronidase (an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid). These products typically last anywhere from 6 months up to 1-2 years depending on the product used, the area injected, and how much filler is injected.
